Anonymous Chat on Telegram — How HiStranger's Bot Works
Most people think of anonymous stranger chat as something that happens in a browser. Open a tab, get paired, talk, close the tab. But there's a growing number of people who prefer to keep everything inside Telegram — and HiStranger has a bot that lets you do exactly that.
This post explains what the bot actually does, how anonymous it really is, and how to start using it.
What is the HiStranger Telegram bot?
The HiStranger Telegram bot is a stranger-pairing system that runs entirely inside your Telegram app. You send a command, the bot puts you in a queue, and when someone else is waiting — whether on Telegram or on the HiStranger website — you get connected. From that point on, everything you type gets forwarded to your partner and vice versa, relayed by the bot.
No separate app. No browser tab. Just Telegram, which you probably already have open.
Is it actually anonymous?
Yes — more than you might expect. When you use the bot, your Telegram username and phone number are never shared with your chat partner. Your partner sees only a name like "Stranger" and the messages you type. The bot acts as a relay. Your Telegram identity never crosses to the other person.
This is different from Telegram's own group chats or DMs, where your username and photo are visible. With HiStranger's bot, you're a stranger to the stranger.
How to start — step by step
Open Telegram and search for @HiStrangerBot. Tap Start.
Tap the Find Stranger button (or send /find). The bot puts you in the pairing queue.
Within a few seconds, you'll get a "Connected!" message. Your partner is on the other end — they could be on Telegram or on the HiStranger website. Either way, you both see the same messages.
Chat. You can send text and photos. When you're done, tap Stop or send /stop. The conversation ends and both sides are disconnected.
What about the AI bot fallback?
If no human partner is found within a few seconds, HiStranger automatically pairs you with an AI conversation partner — one of several distinct AI personas, each with their own personality and texting style. You can keep chatting, and when a real human becomes available you can search again. The AI is there so you're never just staring at a "waiting…" screen.
Can you send photos?
Yes. When you send a photo through the bot, HiStranger relays it to your partner. If your partner is on Telegram, the photo is forwarded directly via Telegram's CDN — no bytes flow through our servers. If your partner is on the web, the photo is delivered through the browser chat. Either way, it gets there.
What can't you do on Telegram vs. the website?
The bot covers the core chat experience well. A few things are web-only at the moment:
- Typing indicators ("Stranger is typing...") — not available in bot conversations
- The dark/light theme toggle and full chat UI
- Locale-specific pages and language selection
For everything else — pairing, chatting, photos, skipping, stopping — the bot is a full peer to the web interface.

Why Telegram for anonymous chat?
A few reasons people prefer the bot over the browser:
- Notifications. If you're waiting for a partner, Telegram will ping you the moment you're connected. A browser tab won't unless it's in focus.
- Already open. Most people have Telegram open all day. No extra tab to manage.
- Mobile keyboard. Telegram's mobile keyboard experience is often smoother than typing in a mobile browser.
- Works on slow connections. Telegram's protocol is more efficient than browser SSE for unreliable networks.
Privacy notes
Using the bot does not give HiStranger access to your other Telegram chats, contacts, or messages. The bot only sees messages you send directly to it. Telegram's own privacy protections apply — your phone number is never shared with us or your partner.
