Truth or Dare on HiStranger — Play With Strangers, No Login

Truth or Dare is one of the oldest party games in existence for a reason: it works. Two or more people, one prompt, and suddenly the conversation goes somewhere it wouldn't have on its own. Now it's built into HiStranger — you can start a game from any chat, right in your browser, with no account.

Here's how it works, what's in the prompt bank, and why we designed it to fit anonymous stranger chat instead of copying a party-game app.

What it is

Click the Games ▾ dropdown in the message bar of any chat and pick Truth or Dare. Works in three places: your 1-on-1 stranger chat, any private group room, or The Lounge (our always-on public room). Pick a tier, and one player is on the spot: they choose Truth or Dare, get a prompt from us, and answer in the chat. Then they pass the turn to the next player.

The whole game state lives in memory on our side — game_id, current player, current prompt. Nothing is written to a database. When everyone leaves the room or ends the game, the state disappears. Same ephemeral shape as the rest of HiStranger.

Three tiers, pick your energy

Every game starts with a tier pick. This scopes what the prompts feel like — pick what matches the vibe of the people you're playing with. You can end a game and start a new one at any tier at any time.

Safe

Party-game energy. Anyone can play. Prompts like "What's a childhood cartoon you'd still watch?" or "Send a haiku about your current mood." Nothing personal, nothing awkward. Good starting point when you don't know the person yet.

Spicy

Flirty and personal, but nothing explicit. Prompts like "What's your love language, honestly?" or "Describe your ideal first date in one sentence." Feels more like a real date-night party game and less like a middle-school sleepover.

Party 18+

Adult-themed, bold vibes — the confident-and-a-little-flirty energy of a night out. Not explicit sexual content, not "share your address," nothing that would make you uncomfortable if screenshotted. The line we drew: confidence, yes; personal info or real-world action, no.

600+ prompts, safety-vetted

The prompt bank is over 600 curated prompts — roughly 100 truths and 100 dares per tier. Each one was written or rewritten by us, then scanned against a hard safety blocklist that rejects anything asking for real-world contact (phone number, address, meeting up, social handles), explicit sexual acts, or self-harm. If a prompt matches the blocklist, our loader refuses to start the app at all — we never ship an unvetted bank.

The bank leans into prompts that work because you're in a chat. Dares like "send a selfie of your current facial expression" or "type your next message using only emojis" compose with the medium. IRL party dares ("do 20 pushups") don't translate to a browser chat, so we skipped them.

How to play

Step 1

Open the chat, pick a name, and either wait for a stranger to pair or join a group room from the Groups tab.

Step 2

In the message bar, click the Games ▾ button (next to the image button). Pick Truth or Dare.

Step 3

Choose a tier — Safe, Spicy, or Party 18+. A game panel appears above your message input with the current player and turn state.

Step 4

When it's your turn, pick Truth or Dare, get a prompt, and answer in the chat. Hit "Done — pass turn" when you're ready to hand off. Anyone can end the game.

How group mode works

In a private room or The Lounge, the game auto-rotates through real members in join order. If someone leaves mid-game, they're removed from the rotation. If the room drops below 2 real players, the game ends automatically — no orphan sessions hanging around.

In The Lounge specifically, the ghost personas (our AI conversational bots) sit out. They're bots — they don't play games. You need at least one other real human present to start a game there. If you're solo in the Lounge, the app tells you to wait for someone else to join before you can start.

What we did about safety

Skip is always free. No counter, no shame, no public log. If a prompt lands wrong, hit Skip and get a new one.
Anyone can end the game. Not just the person who started it. If someone in the room is uncomfortable, the End button is always visible.
The bank is safety-vetted at load time. Anything matching the blocklist crashes our app at boot. Prompts that made it into production went through the filter.
Emergency kill switch. If abuse spikes, we can turn the whole feature off from our config without a redeploy.

Why we built it to fit anonymous chat

Truth or Dare apps exist. What they don't have is a real stranger on the other end. That's the interesting part — playing with someone you'll never see again, in a chat with no accounts and no history, changes what people are willing to say. It's more honest because there's no reputation to protect. That's also why we drew the safety line where we did: no personal info, no real-world action. The whole point is a low-stakes moment with a stranger, not the beginning of anything you'd regret.
